Hungarian Nut Sticks
Florence Armstrong & Catherine Zarlengo (my cousin)
Cream 1 Cup butter and add 1/2 Cup sugar thoroughly. Add 1 egg and beat well.
Sift 21/4 Cups flour, 1/4 teaspoon salt and add slowly to creamed mixture (mixing well after each addition). Flavor with 1/2 teaspoon vanilla.
Spread mixture out evenly in a jellyroll pan (to the corners)- it will make a very thin layer. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes.
While it is baking mix the following ingredients in a heavy saucepan: 21/4 Cups chopped pecans, 1 Cup sugar, 1 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/2 Cup egg whites (4) and mix well.
Cook over low heat constantly until the sugar is dissolved. Turn the heat up to moderate and stir until the mixture thickens and comes away from the side of the pan.
Spread out evenly over the baked layer of cookie dough. Bake 15 minutes more. Cool slightly and sprinkle with confectioners sugar.

This recipe isn’t written like recipes today, but I just couldn’t modernize it. To do so would have silenced my mom’s voice- I can still hear her telling me how to make these cookies.
