Half the fun of a trip is to figure out what to wear. I know by experience that when you streamline your wardrobe, your trip will be more fun because you won’t have to haul and sort through so much stuff.
Make a Packing List: Start by making a list of all the items you’ll need for your trip. This will help ensure you don’t forget anything important and prevent overpacking. Create a cabin bag that you can take out of your carry-on once on the plane. In it, place all your essentials for the journey: an electronic reader, chargers, lip balm, medicine, etc. I store my suitcase in the overhead and only have this bag and my handbag at my feet.
Choose the Right Luggage: Select luggage that suits your travel needs, whether it’s a suitcase, backpack, or duffel bag. Consider the size and weight restrictions of your mode of transportation. I love the Away large cabin bag (shown in the photo). I also like MZ Wallace’s totes. I’ve given up on backpacks because of the weight. Always make sure you can lift and carry it. Even on the nicest trips, you will end up hauling your stuff at least once. Put colorful tape (even tacky) on your suitcase so that you can identify it from all the others that look exactly alike.
I like a crossbody handbag for weight and safety.
Pack Light: Aim to pack only what you truly need. Choose versatile, mix-and-match clothing items to create multiple outfits. Lay out all of your potential picks and remove 20%. You will not miss them. I always carry raingear and Uniqlo’s lightweight vest. You never know when you will need it. Select one main color group and then add accents. Once on the road, you will wear the same clothes repeatedly. Find fabrics you can rinse out. I love Athleta’s travel clothing. Check the weather for destination often. It can change and leave you in a lurch without the correct clothing.
Roll Your Clothes: Rolling your clothes instead of folding them can save space and prevent wrinkles. It also allows you to fit more items into your luggage.
Use Packing Cubes or Compression Bags: Packing cubes or compression bags can help organize your belongings and maximize space in your luggage. They’re especially useful for separating different types of clothing or keeping dirty laundry separate.
Pack Items in Layers: Place heavier items and shoes at the bottom of your luggage, followed by lighter items on top. This helps distribute weight evenly and prevents items from getting crushed. I take only three pairs of shoes.
Utilize Empty Spaces: Use any empty spaces in your luggage, such as inside shoes or between items. This helps maximize space and prevent wasted room. Include empty baggies in your suitcase for snacks and sandwiches. I always include a sturdy plastic knife for cutting fruit and cheese.
Limit Toiletries: Bring only the essential toiletries in travel-sized containers to save space and avoid potential leaks. Consider whether certain items can be purchased at your destination instead of packing. When you get back home, replenish your shampoos and creams. That way, your go-bag will be ready for you.
Wear Bulky Items: If you’re traveling with bulky items like jackets or boots, wear them instead of packing them in your luggage to save space. Always have a scarf to keep you warm if the cabin is chilly or to protect you from unpleasant smells.
Leave Room for Souvenirs: If you anticipate purchasing souvenirs during your trip, leave some extra space in your luggage or pack a foldable bag to accommodate them on your return journey. I will bring home some shoes and scarves, for sure.
Following these packing tips can streamline the packing process and make traveling more convenient and enjoyable!
