No one tries to court fashion disaster, but sometimes these disasters find us. Not to worry- anything can be solved if you’re prepared. Create a mini fashion tool kit. Have on hand- twist ties; disposable razor; rubbing alcohol; baby shampoo, oil & powder; wire hanger; double sticky tape; baby wipes; vinegar; paper clips; vaseline. . .
- Reattach a loose button with the metal wire from a twist tie. Peel away the paper, insert the wire through the button and the fabric and twist to secure. This works best on sturdy fabrics like cotton and wool- don’t try this on silk or fragile fabrics.
- Pills on sweaters and knit shirts can be removed by gently going over the sweater with a disposable razor
- Use a cloth dampened with rubbing alcohol to remove ink from garments.
- Remove gum from clothing by putting the garment into a plastic bag and then placing into your freezer for a few hours. Once the gum is hardened, use a butter knife to scrape off the gum.
- Reshape shrunken wool garments by immersing them into a solution of 1 quart cold water and 1 tablespoon of baby shampoo for a few minutes to relax the fibers. Don’t rinse, lightly squeeze the excess water from the garment and then lay it on a flat surface. Stretch the item to its original shape and size. Secure the edges with heavy objects until dry.
- Rub a few drops of baby oil on tangled chains and necklaces to help untangle the knots.
- Sprinkle a little baby powder on an oily spot to absorb the mess- great for suede coats. Brush the powder off with a white cloth.
- Makeup remover cloths and baby wipes can remove lipstick and other stains from your clothes.
- Deodorant marks can be removed by rubbing them with a wet,well-wrung washcloth.
- Double sticky tape is a godsend- use to fix hems.
- Add a 1/4 cup of white vinegar to your rinse cycle to reduce static cling. Also rubbing a wire coat hanger under your clothes will reduce the static cling.
- Rubbing Vaseline into your heels will help shoes from digging into your feet and prevent blisters.
