DON’T FRET, PACK SMART & ENJOY YOURSELF!

10 Days In France

Decide what size of suitcase to take. Everything fit in the carry-on, but there was no room for any purchases. I went with the mid-size. It is made by Away and worked very well. I’m glad that at the last minute I switched. The only other luggage I had was my backpack and that fit on the suitcase handle. It was very easy to maneuver and get on and off the trains.

How it all came together

Random packing thoughts:

The jumpsuit worked great for travel and for going out to dinner. I just added a scarf to dress it up.

Purchased two pairs of shoes and the gold pants- very helpful. I did need another walking shoe besides my tennis shoes.

Basing the wardrobe on black pants and jeans was great. Only thing missing was another sweater. My raincoat wasn’t right for just walking around and we didn’t have but two rain showers.

I loved my sleeveless collared white blouse for layering. It was perfect by itself or under a t-shirt. I didn’t need the other sleeveless white tank that I brought. I should go back to my own advice: pack only one of any clothing item in the same color.

Wore my necklaces, but not the belts- too much trouble.

Also, loved my day pouch. It is from Lulu Lemon and I think its purpose is to hold a water bottle, but it was much more versatile than that.

General Packing Tips:

Check the destination weather first and pack accordingly.

Plan your wardrobe around your shoes. I like hybrid shoes that are multipurpose; sandals/dress shoes, walking/hiking. Three pairs should do.

A pair of flip flops can double as shower shoes and sandals.

Two pairs of pants, four tops (two solid and two print), two tank-tops, skirt, walking shorts or crops, sweater/jacket, vest and dark jeans. I like fast dry apparel- easy to wash and dries quickly.

Socks (I always have a pair to wear on the plane), underwear and sleeping attire that can be rinsed out.

Select only two colors- black is always my base and I either add olive, tan or gold to break up the monotony.

Think threes- my rule of thumb is always dress in three layers and plan on wearing any item at least three times.

Scarves- they don’t take up any room and can be used to jazz up your basic black, protect you from the sun/cold or used as a makeshift picnic blanket. Some people like to roll, but I like to fold my stuff using the Flip-Fold (at Container Store). The neat cubes make me happy.

Multi-sized zip-lock bags, packs of mini tissues, makeup remover pads and bungee cords are always helpful.

Indulge your inner fashion nerd and lay out everything in outfits: match the outfits to the days you are traveling. Walk away for a couple of hours. Then, reassess and remove a few pieces. You won’t miss them.

A foldable, thin rain coat with a hood is an essential. Wear your heaviest clothing, shoes & jacket on the plane.

Keep in mind that no matter how much help you have, there will be times when you have to carry your own suitcase and make sure you can.

Leave room for souvenirs and treasures- remember the clothes never go back into the suitcase as well as when you first packed.

Thank you, Ann. Just live here 2 yrs from Santa Fe. Found your shop by going to the Consigned Furniture, Happy Canyons Florist, the Frame Shop and Starbucks! Loved my couple purchases from your shop.
I’m following you….with delight. I will use your packing tips in Sept.
I hope you will see me, aging happily at 82. I’m using Lancome and Aveda for my products. I’d love advice.
Just tell me when you are in town. Let’s find a time in the next month.
