WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR HAIR STYLIST RETIRES

How to find a new stylist

I have been trying to find a hairdresser to replace my wonderful Oui Lam, retiring this December. Finding a replacement is challenging. Oui spoiled me with his skill, on-time performance, cheerful personality, and understanding of what my hair could and couldn’t do. I have been searching for a new stylist, but it has been a rollercoaster ride.

I had mixed results with two stylists I tried. Thinking about my experiences, I realized that being clear about what you want when getting a haircut is crucial. Don’t assume the stylist can read your mind, understand all your hair concerns, or have magical powers. It’s essential to communicate any specific features or concerns you have. Also, just because they are nice doesn’t mean they can cut hair. Don’t be shy about voicing your opinion.

Look at the salon. Who does it cater to? If everyone has long hair and that ship sailed for you, it might not be your place.

Also, consider the stylist’s organizational skills. If they run late or need to be better organized, it could impact your appointment. Bringing pictures of the style you want can be helpful, but remember that everyone’s hair is unique, and the style featured may not suit you or work with your hair.

Ask for suggestions from the stylist and have them agree to just a trim. That way, your hair isn’t ruined. (Note to self.)

Asking for recommendations from friends or strangers with great hair is an excellent way to find a good match.

Once at the appointment, be bold and speak up if you dislike something or something is off. It’s your hair, and you have the right to speak up.

Finding a new hairdresser can be daunting, but don’t give up. Keep trying until you find the perfect match. I have a few more recommendations, but I plan to let my hair grow out some before I try again.

    Hi Ann! Love your communications!
I’m a former customer of Never Pay Retail.
My friend and I would travel from Longmont to spend the day shopping and lunching. So many great memories. Now retired and living on the Western Slope still have connection with fashion, fun, travel, and style thanks to you.
    Have a Great Holiday-season.

Thank you for continuing to share your ideas about all things fashion. Love your makeup and hair videos! So happy to be able to see you and know you are doing well!
    Always,

Ann, love your blogs. I too am searching for a new hairstylist. I now live in SE Phoenix area. There are so many places to choose but where to begin is daunting for sure.

I read a comment from one gal that now lives on western slope and carries her colors shopping. I too rely on them. For convenience I took a photo of my colors fanned out and carry them on my phone. Quick reference so I’m always prepared.
    Just a thought.
    Maril.

Hi Ann, I’ve just joined your community. I’m really interested in your advice about hair. I’ve got very similar hair, thin and fine. I love your hair cut! Here’s the problem: I’ve tried to show it to my stylist but you are always moving in your videos! Any way you could share side and back views of your hair? Thsnks

      Hi Emily,
I just recently did a video where you can see my whole head. It’s on my reels. I hope that helps.

Ann, I also have thick but fine hair. Am currently searching for a good moussecand hairspray.
